Enterprising and innovative engineering companies of all sizes are being urged to apply now for the 2002 Queen's Awards for enterprise - a UK accolade for outstanding business success. The 2002 round of the UK's own 'Oscars for Enterprise' recognises and awards exceptional achievements and advances in all areas of British business.
Engineering winners in the latest Queen's Awards, announced on 21 April 2001, included Miko Oilfield Supplies, Mechatherm International, Process Systems Enterprise, Rotork Controls, Melles Griot, Sortex, Tritech International and Burro Happold. Organisers are hoping their success will spur on more businesses from the sector to investigate and enter the 2002 Awards.
"We know there are a lot of talented firms out there and we want them to come forward and receive the recognition they deserve," says David Moore, head of the Queen's Award office. "Companies from the engineering sector have done particularly well in this year's Awards - let's build on that success for next year and showcase the UK's world-beating talent in this area." Any type of business can apply for a Queen's Award in one or more of three categories: International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development. Entrants must employ at least two people, be based in the UK and be high achievers in their field. There is no limit to the number of awards that can be made in one year though the organisers insist the standard required to win is high.
Amongst this year's winners were Buro Happold, which gained the award for engineering sustainable buildings. The practice works to reduce the impact of buildings upon the environment. Recent projects employed engineered timber made from low grade pulp, recycled materials including cardboard, aggregates and concrete, and natural ventilation systems designed to limit use of high energy-consumption equipment.
The right to use the Queens Awards Emblem for five years is one of the direct benefits enjoyed by winners. The prestige of being associated with the Queens Awards is often used by businesses as a promotional and marketing tool in an increasingly competitive domestic and global economy. Entrants who do not win receive a feedback report detailing the strengths and weaknesses of their application, helping them to plan for future award entries.
The winners of the 2002 Queen's Awards for Enterprise will be announced on 21 April 2002 - The Queen's personal birthday. In the following months, each winner will receive the Award at their own premises from the Lord Lieutenant. There is also a reception at Buckingham Palace, hosted by The Queen, for three representatives from each winning business.
The deadline for next year's awards is 31 October 2001. Potential entrants should phone 0870 513 4486 or visit www.queensawards.org.uk for an entry pack.
