MAS EEF attack

The EEF (Engineering Employers' Federation) is continuing its efforts to raise the productivity levels of UK manufacturing by managing four of the DTIÕs new Regional Centres for Manufacturing Excellence.

The Centres, launched by Patricia Hewitt, the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, are being established as part of the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), They will offer hands-on practical advice to manufacturers, especially smaller firms, in techniques such as lean manufacturing and, are intended to help companies innovate and add value in an increasingly competitive environment.

ÒIncreased take up of lean manufacturing and world class performance techniques, as well as continuous professional development, are vital if UK manufacturing is to raise its game," says EEF Director-General, Martin Temple. "The MAS will be a vital tool for delivering critical business advice to small and medium size companies at a local level. However, it must be seen to be of real benefit for companies if its future funding is to be secured."

EEF South, in partnership with the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA), is responsible for delivering the service in the South East and in London. EEF West Midlands and EEF Western are part of the consortiums running the service in the West Midlands and South West respectively. In addition, a number of other EEF Associations are exploring ways in which they can work with the MAS in their respective areas.
